Necrosis in my bones ? YUCK

Hi. My name is Marina and I am preparing for my second knee replacement. My right knee has to be done in 2009 because the bones collapsed- WHAT ? COLLAPSED..? That was my reaction.. well that was my reaction the day after surgery, the day before surgery was all pain.

I was leaving my job as a pediatric nurse, going down the stairs in my hospital (trying to be healthy) and the next thing I knew I was in terrible pain and lying on the landing. I was quickly transported via gurney to the emergency department and I was nuts with pain, worst in my life. I could've kissed the nurse who brought the pain meds, I was never so grateful. The initial x-ray showed fractures in the joint ends of my left knee, and I had total knee replacement surgery the next day.

When my surgeon came in the next day he gave me the news- i has osteonecrosis / avascular necrosis- the blood supply to my bone was compromised and the bone got weaker and weaker til it collapsed. Worse than that I was told I probably had it in my other joints- because it's progressive and there's no cure. My disease is thought to come from prednisone I had been given for asthma.

Breaking us to the present - my osteonecrosis has affected several of my joints,( hips, ankle, knees) and I now need to have my right knee replaced. I guess I am lucky to know what to expect but my orthopedist says this time will be less painful, and my of my bone will be controlled since it hasn't collapsed yet. I will be avoiding all stairs, that's for sure. I can tell you that I'm about reached my limit with the pain, and ready to try anything.

If you have osteonecrosis- please join our support group on Facebook called OUCH Osteonecrosis. Being that no one has heard of our disease it's nice to talk to someone who understands. Which is why I joined this group for my knee surgery. Thanks :-)
