I started to have painful and debilitating nerve spasms in my knee 2 months post-op. Couldn’t sleep and ROM and ability to do rehab exercises deteriorated after having made steady progress. I tried NSAIDs, Tylenol, muscle relaxants, hydration, potassium, magnesium supplements, rest, heat, ice. Nothing helped. I have a history of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), but these spasms were much more painful and non-stop. I decided to try drinking about 4 ounces of tonic water which contains quinine before going to sleep, since I know that some people who have RLS do this to stop the spasms, even though I have never needed to. I HAVE NOT HAD A SPASM SINCE. My primary care physician does not recommend this, although the amount of quinine in 4oz of tonic water is only about 10mg. I have now regained my prior ROM and am able to continue my knee rehab exercises. I also sleep through the night and only take 2 Tylenol once or twice a day along with turmeric for inflammation.
If nothing else helps you with spasms, a small amount of tonic water may do the trick, especially if you have a history of RLS.

Thank you! Very helpful. Will get my second knee replacement in 5 weeks and am again terrified. Had my first one 2 years ago. Went well.
